Fan Dies of Impalement at Chevelle Show This Weekend
According to The PRP, a fan died at a Chevelle show in Chicago this weekend after being impaled through the chest by metal pipes. Jesus fucking Christ.
On Friday, 24-year-old Kyle Kirchoff and his friends apparently wandered into a restricted area of Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom and onto the catwalks backstage. When a plaster section gave way, Kirchoff fell six to eight feet and was impaled on two organ pipes.
Chevelle issued the following statement on Sunday:
“To our fans, as you may or may not have heard, an extremely unfortunate event occurred at our show in Chicago Friday night.
“We were asked by police to stop our set so that the authorities could tend to an injured fan. Once the severity of the accident was determined the authorities cleared out the venue to give them time to investigate. We want to thank our Chicago fans for their respect of the authorities and for understanding that these decisions made by the authorities were out of our control. We love our fans in Chicago and while there was no question that the show would be cut short in light of this tragic event, we will be sure to play for you all again as soon as possible.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Chevelle fan Kyle Kirchhoff and at this time we ask that you all keep Kyle and his family in your thoughts and prayers…
“S.P.D.”
There you have it. This is obviously very terrible, and our hearts go out to Kirchoff’s family and friends.
Concert-goers: be fucking careful. Don’t wander into a restricted area or think you can handle walking across narrow platforms suspended in air when you’re at a loud, raucous metal show where the whole place is probably vibrating with sound. Venues are full of dangerous shit that can hurt you, like, well, the pipes of an organ. It’s an extremely metal way to die, definitely, but something tells me your loved ones won’t feel that way at your funeral.
Here’s footage of the band ending their set and cutting their encore short.
