Sh*t That Comes Out Today: May 19, 2015
Hi MetalSucks reader! Welcome to another really special Shit That Comes Out Today, your satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and now, we stick ‘em in a fancy Spotify playlist too (below) — all for your jammage! Now crank this shit up!
·
George Kollias
Invictus (Season Of Mist)
On a playlist with: Nile, Behemoth, Septicflesh
Listen “Shall Rise/Shall Be Dead” (here) Invictus full stream (here)
Normally, the solo albums from already-famed musicians suffer from wankery and pretense. We know Jeff Loomis is an exception — now we can add George Kollias to that reigning class of individuals! He’s the drum-beast from Nile, and he goddamn knows how to write death metal. Bonus feature: the excellent drum track is volumed just above normal in the production (no surprise).
·
Eschaton
Sentinel Apocalypse (Unique Leader)
On a playlist with: Archspire, Rings Of Saturn, Divine Heresy
Listen “Falsified Existence” (here) “Immortal Mutilation” (here)
Guitar lubbers out there could love Sentinel Apocalypse. It’s razor sharp technical death metal with tons of howling riffs, drum blasts, wicked complicated bass lines and etc. Despite this, it does lack the togetherness and tenacity of its playlist buddies. Cheap thrills!
·
Valve
Apnee (Wooaaargh)
On a playlist with: Plebeian Grandstand, As We Draw
Listen Apnee full stream (here)
An album can be “thrown together” but still wonderful, kind of like a still kinda-good stew which has your whole cupboard + half your fridge tossed into it (guilty). Anyway, Apnee is messy, but in the French sorta way — it all coalesces, but only near the end after you’ve been seated nicely into the chaos and discordance!
·
Venomous Maximus
Firewalker (Shadow Kingdom)
On a playlist with: Quentin Tarantino, David Bowie, Zakk Wylde, Jesu
Listen “Through The Black” (here)
It’ll be surprise if Tarantino doesn’t use Firewalker to build the soundtrack for his next film! Okay, he probably won’t — but songs like “Through The Black” are that special odd combination of serious and silly (read: camp). As a result, they rock almost like a super-metal David Bowie, just less self-aware.
·
King Parrot
Dead Set (Housecore)
On a playlist with: Pig Destroyer, Weedeater, Ne Obliviscaris
Listen Dead Set full stream (here)
Read Emperor Rhombus MetalSucks review (here)
The death metal album of the week — and one of the best this year. If you find the framework and musicianship too stilted, you should be saved by the all-star vocal performance. Or the fact that each song has its own special hook, no bled-together feel some other albums suffer from.
·
Secrets Of The Sky
Pathway (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: Lycus, Kauan + Tombs
Listen Pathway full stream (here)
Pathway is a ferociously progressive doom album, and I expect it to draw some flak for its spacey atmosphere and big, dramatic sweeps. But only those with the most shrewd and shriveled faces can resist it’s bewildering size and brilliant density. Pathway is a big, big leap into dangerous territory, but it lands like a perfectly fuckin’ toned gymnast, or Neil Armstrong!
