Matriarch (Sumerian)

Some post-post-Meshuggah djent is worthy — and Veil Of Maya with earlier releases like [id] really took some cakes. But little changed on subsequent albums, and Matriarch is by that account totally formulaic, rote, and predictable. Shame! The ruse-inciting clean vocals are actually the least concerning bit of this album (maybe even an high point), as they are unabashedly and perhaps unsurprisingly Periphery-esque.

Undead
False Prophecies (Listenable)

If pounding djent-jams and other hyper-modern jams have you thirsting for more tr00th, check out False Prophecies. Undead risked barking up the Very Generic Death Metal tree, but holy shit, they riff their way to success! Despite being classic and simplistic at heart, False Prophecies rings brightly with newer death metal bands but retains those all important classy/classic feels (you know, like cigarettes and leather jackets and flip phones).

Wicked Inquisition
Wicked Inquisition (Tridroid)

Nothing is more refreshing than throwing shit back to basics. To wit, Wicked Inquisition is totally without frill. At all points where try-harder bands would “spice things up,” Wicked Inquisition turns honorably to the baseline tenants of rock ‘n’ roll. As a result, you get a clean, head-bobbing listen without any surprise corners or questionable ideas, but somehow your interest is retained from start to finish!

Domovoyd (Svart)

When your opening track drones for nearly 17 minutes, you’re really asking listeners to tune in and tune out. Domovoyd relies heavily on this Learyean philosophy: mind-numbing guitar solos, endless jam sessions, eerie atmospheric breaks, and schizophrenic drum tendencies. Bottom line: it works. Also three cheers for the class-A album art, which accurately represents the weird mood you’ll be in after an hour’s worth of cognitive disassociation!

Wolf’s Cry (Pitch Black)

Right out of left field, Wolf’s Cry shakes things up with non-metal elements in a BTBAM-style framework. There’s a lot of prog happening here, but most of it is vocal-based, both male and female. Be prepared for liberal a cappella, all charged up ‘n’ shit with echo effects and accompanying major chords. But despite all the flair and pantomime, Wolf’s Cry rocks like a simpler, easier-to-digest album.

De Doden Hebben Het Goed (Consouling Sounds)

De Doden Hebben Het Goed is fun to say (even if ya don’t speak Dutch), and it means “the dead do it well,” which is also cool. This is definitely black metal, just a bit fuzzier and more abstract. And for those qualities we can set it apart from all the other black metal bands popping up these days. Which, semi-unfortunately, are many. Wiegedood is one you should actually be following: raw, pure, unearthly, and dramatic. Love it!
