New Mutoid Man Track!
Mutoid Man’s 2013 debut album Helium Head was absolutely killer. The brainchild of Cave In singer/guitarist Steve Brodsky and Converge drummer Ben Koller, Mutoid Man took the best of both of its forebears and parlayed it into an altogether new ethos — together with bassist Nick Cageao — producing a fiery, nasty, riff-filled metal and punk fest of unstoppable, unbeatable energy. Go and stream it right here if you somehow missed it, and why not, stream it again even if you didn’t.
In March we got some in-studio performance footage of a brand new Mutoid Man track called “Bridgeburner,” and now we get a proper recording of one called “Sweet Ivy” via Rolling Stone. Shocker of all shockers: it rips!
As a bonus, below the Mutoid Man track, the music from level 2 of the classic NES game Contra, which Brodsky claims inspired the track. I totally hear the influence in the main riff!
Side note: what a weird world we live in where Revolver, allegedly a heavy metal magazine, would never touch a band like Mutoid Man with a ten foot pole, but former EIC Brandon Geist moves over to Rolling Stone — the magazine of monthly, neverending Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin tributes — and gets to premiere a nasty new Mutoid Man track there, of all places. Backwards but awesome! Not that we’re complaining.
