Unlocking the Truth Unlocking Their Sony Contract

Man, kids grow up so fast, don’t they? It’s like, one minute they’re taking their first steps, and then boom!, you blink and they’re trying to get out of an unfavorable record contract. Where does the time go?

Take, for example, Unlocking the Truth. Just eight months ago, when its members were just twelve and thirteen-years-old,  the youthful Brooklyn band signed a potentially lucrative deal with Sony. And now, before they’ve released so much as a sample of a single, they’re trying to ankle the label. Reports Billboard:

“Our attorneys are working on our exit from Sony now,” guitarist, songwriter and singer Malcolm Brickhouse said at the March 14 world premiere of Breaking a Monster, a documentary on how the band rose from playing the sidewalks of Times Square to the main stage of Coachella and Vans Warped Tour.

Band manager Alan Sacks confirmed they were in the process of leaving Sony, but said there were no other details to give.

Sony subsidiary The Cherry Party had previously been set to release Unlocking the Truth’s new EP in partnership with Artery, but who knows what the status of that deal is now.

So why do Unlocking the Truth want out of their contract? No clue. That agreement called for hefty advances… if the band could sell 250,000 copies of their first album. Maybe someone on Team Truth realized that was a tall order? I’m totally speculating. Presumably, we’ll know more soon.
