Idol Listening: Statues’ Favorite Songs to Flip Tables To
That Perth, Australia’s Statues are fans of bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die, and Norma Jean is no surprise; like those groups, Statues’ music could easily be described as “chaoscore.” Anyone who digs those bands’ mathy, vitriolic sound is going to fall head-over-heels with Statues, guaranteed.
To celebrate the January 9 release of Statues’ debut album, Together We’re Alone (purchase: physical, digital), we asked the band to assemble a playlist of his some of their favorite table-flipping anthems, both classic and modern, to share with the MetalSucks masses. Check out that playlist below, along with the band’s thoughts on the tracks they selected!
John Overthrow (Guitars)
Every Time I Die, “Overstayer”
This is the song on From Parts Unknown that I just could not get out of my head. It starts strong as hell, and every time I spun it in the car, I couldn’t help but bash my steering wheel until I would creep out other motorists. Solid track from a solid record.
Agoraphobic Nosebleed, “Trauma Queen”
This is such an aggression-fueled song, and when I listen to it, I cannot help but bang my head until my neck blows out. Kat [Katz] is one of my favorite vocalists of all time, and her piercing delivery in this song always wins me over.
The Dillinger Escape Plan, “43% Burnt”
The first Dillinger song I ever heard, and it’s the aural equivalent of an epileptic seizure. It literally makes me want to flip a fucking table and tear my own pants off. I completely understand the fire breathing during the band’s early live sets, because what the fuck else are you going to doing to do with a track that is pure speed and chaos? Still a big favorite of mine.
Magrudergrind, “Heretics”
Bursting with energy and is blisteringly fast. The stop-start nature of the song makes you want to get out of your seat and kick somebody in the teeth. This band know how to stir up some cathartic outbursts of rage.
Scott Kay (Guitars)
Norma Jean, “If You Got It At Five, You Got It At Fifty”
This was my number one table-flipper of 2014. Everything from the opening riff right through to the massive ending makes me want to jump out of a ten story building just for kicks.
Nails, “Abandon All Life”
Relentless, like the pain you get from someone kicking your shins repeatedly. The production value on this record is bar none the best in this style in my opinion. It doesn’t just flip tables, it obliterates them.
Strapping Young Lad, “Oh My Fucking God”
Contains the most insane wall-of-sound section I’ve ever heard in music. The entire record is like being stuck carless in the middle of the German autobahn in nothing but your underwear; a complete freakout.
Matt Templeman (Bass)
Stray from the Path, “Negative and Violent”
I heard this track for the first time a couple of years ago after it was recommended by a friend. I love how bouncy and groove-laden it is, and the intensity of Drew [York’s] vocals. Touring with these guys was amazing, they are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Hearing them play every night was alright as well!
Norma Jean, “Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste”
This was the first track I ever heard by the mighty Norma Jean, and it’s still one of my favorites. Bless The Marty, Kiss The Child is my favorite album of theirs, and I’ll always have a soft spot for the vocal work Josh Scogin did with the band. We all love the outro featuring Aaron Weiss, and we’ve always wanted to try something with a similar vibe… which we did on our track “Foreseeing The Cloud And Not The Rain.”
The Chariot, “Back To Back”
I feel that very little to be said about this track. It’s probably one of the strongest opening tracks on any record ever, and is just a great example of everything The Chariot was about.
Rage Against the Machine, “Bulls on Parade”
The snare flam at the start of this track makes me want to set off fire extinguisher in a crowded elevator. If someone asked to hear a track as a gateway into Rage Against The Machine, you could do no better than this song.
