Friday 5: Headbanger’s Bowie
Happy Friday, MetalSucks reader! Welcome to MetalSucks Friday 5, our awesome series that appears every Friday (duh) on MetalSucks (duhh) and involves the quantity of five (duhhh).
Here’s how it works: A list of best/worst/weirdest/whatever five somethings is posted by one of your beloved MetalSucks contributors or by one of our buds (like you?). Then you, our cherished reader, checks it out, has a chuckle, then chimes in with a list of the same. No sweat, just whatever springs to mind, k? (Just like that movie about those losers working at a Chicago record store!) After all, it’s Friday — the day dedicated by the gods to mindless, fun time-wasting. Today we test the theory of absolutes in an infinite universe! That is, if an adventurous rocker tries everything, then he’s done some metal!

THE FIVE
The Five Moments When A Weird Rock Icon Might’ve Gone Metal
THE LISTER

1. When everybody covered David Bowie’s “Hallo Spaceboy”
1997-2007
It’s pretty hard to fumble a cover of an amazing song, and anyway the pummeling beats of David Bowie’s “Hallo Spaceboy” translate so well beyond electronica. So it’s unsurprising that metal bands from Behemoth to Pagan’s Mind gave it the cover treatment.
·
2. When David Bowie was in a metal band (nominally)
1988-1992
He formed a quartet called Tin Machine …
·
3. The Man Who Re-Sold The World
1993-94
Kids come up to Bowie and tell him that it’s really cool of him to cover a Nirvana song.
·
4. Ground Control To Helloween
1999
Yes, Helloween covered Bowie’s iconic “Space Oddity.” Its similarity to the original is completely unnerving, squawking voice and all.
·
5. When Bowie Went Industrial
1997
Not only is this one of Bowie’s best songs, but the video is so precious. Who wouldn’t want stalker Trent Reznor to be their cab driver? Answer: ‘90s frosted lizard Bowie, apparently. Maybe Johnny doesn’t want pussy in cars after all.
