The dudes in Affiance (used to) remind me of those party friends you had as a teenager, the nerdy ones who smoked cigarettes and wanted to try dry ice bombs lol. And while their particular style of metalcore was not my jam, I really dug their upbeat attitudes and ballsy vocals. Blackout, though, is Affiance in depressing mid-20s. You know, the time when you drink, smoke, and fuck senselessly and uncontrollably to blur out the newly-obvious daftness of the universe.

From a band whose name contains the word “porn” and from a song titled “Freak Like You,” you’d expect some sultry, boots-and-cats ear-fucking. Uh, nope. What you get is a horrifically botched music video and a mangled attempt at rock music. Most shitty bands, songs, or albums at least have ironic appeal. No. Midnight Confessions is hipster-proof!

Disasterhate writes pretty shitty metal, kinda like this. But just listen to the vocalist’s ripping voice! It’s caustic enough to dissolve even diamond-plated eardrums. It’d be wicked if she could round up a decent set of musicians so that albums like Mirroring The Abyss would be good. Fingers crossed!

Above & Down Below is punchy, slaphappy metal-rock you want at your divorce party. The pump-you-up feels are palpable, but calmed by thick-ass guitar tone and college radio vocals. A&DB gets progressive and heavy too, which refreshes its rock-based bouquet. While this won’t compete with your favorite faster post-metal jams, it’ll be much more rockable while driving down the highway with sunglasses on and a cigarette in your mouth.
