The Haunted - Exit Wounds

Hi MetalSucks reader! Welcome back to Shit That Comes Out Today, your satanic bible of each week’s heavy new releases. We list ’em, we spotlight ’em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and everybody wins. And if we missed any legit new shit, we beg you to email us! Thanks! Now crank it up!

Sólstafir
Sólstafir ÓttaÓtta (Season of Mist)
On a playlist with: Lantlôs, Primordial, Woods Of Ypres
Listen Ótta full stream (here)

Say you want to get your gentle rock on, but with some Icelandic swing. Well, lucky you! Sólstafir is here with Ótta to confuse you with all the sexy foreign language you can handle. Ótta is chock full of sensitivity, Northern vibes, and hard groove, meaning it’s a 100% dynamic package. And your inability to follow the lyrics (unless you speak Icelandic) adds to the album’s already profound mystical quality.

The Haunted - Exit WoundsThe Haunted
Exit Wounds (Century Media)
On a playlist with: Hatesphere, The Crown, Carnal Forge
Listen “Time Will Not Heal” (here) “Cutting Teeth” (here)

I know The Haunted didn’t always have Peter Dolving, but they lost it when they lost him. From Revolver to Unseen we were graced with some of the best vocals in the business. Here. And here. Now we have vanilla groove-core, and they didn’t even put any fucking sprinkles on it. Big frowny face when one of my favorite bands loses their jam and juices.

Black Tongue - Born Hanged / FalsifierBlack Tongue
Born Hanged/Falsifier [Redux] EPs reissue (SOAR/Century Media)
On a playlist with: King Conquer, Dysphoria, Echoes Of Misanthropy
Listen “Falsifier” (here) “Eclipse” (here)

Black Tongue has heavy down fucking pat. There’s been a lot of negative noise surrounding Born Hanged, mostly from the “omg stupid breakdownz all sound the same” club. Whatever. This shit is the muscle car of metal — it’s designed to do just one thing, and one thing well. Think cheaply enjoyable, like a Hostess Twinkie or ripping a knee scab off! I love the try-hard, campy insanity of it, and so should you.

·

Earth Earth
Primitive And Deadly (Southern Lord)
On a playlist with: Om, Sleep, Boris
Listen “From The Zodiacal Light” (here)

If, like me, you’ve never given psychedelic metal a chance, go for Earth’s Primitive And Deadly, one of few space-out albums that sounds good when you’re stone sober. Big, arching vocal hooks overlap with ambient woosh noises and slow-strumming guitars to create the mood. The lengthy tracks keep you hooked. The album art (#woahdude) will have you drooling. Dope, nope?

·

The COlor Morale Hold On Pain EndsThe Color Morale
Hold On Pain Ends (Fearless)
On a playlist with: Like Moths To Flames, Fit For A King, My Ticket Home
Listen Hold On Pain Ends full stream (here)

Hold on, pain ends — but not onto Hold On Pain Ends, which sucks. At least slam-oriented metal can manage enough groove to sound good in the opening slot for, like, Emmure or something. Yet The Color Morale manage only to bungle that meager task.

·

Pig Heart Transplant For Mass ConsumptionPig Heart Transplant
For Mass Consumption (20 Buck Spin/Iron Lung)
On a playlist with: Swans, Iron Lung, Pitch Shifter
Listen “Film” and “Gift” (here)

Just the band name “Pig Heart Transplant” implies a sound like Cattle Decapitation or Pig Destroyer, right? You’re way off. I’ll let you dive into “Film” and “Gift” to figure it out, and I bet my shiniest penny you’ll come back having not figured a damn thing out. Even in a loose definition of “music,” For Mass Consumption might not fit. Ironic? Or just derp?
