Sh*t That Comes Out Today: June 24, 2014
Hey MetalSucks reader! This is Shit That Comes Out Today, the planet’s greatest resource for heavy and hard new releases. Thanks so much for coming! Stay a while, have a listen, find your new jam — it’s all here and it’s all free. And though we could keep thanking and thanking you all day — serious, MS readers rule! — for a moment we’d like to address our beloved shitters. That is, those responsible for the creation, promotion, and distribution of the new shit that comes out today and on 49 more Tuesdays each year. To these awesome folks we say, Hey thank you too! Keep emailing your timely info about releases, keep circulating advance music from them, and keep hassling us whenever your special new release somehow fails to appear on our list! Thanks!

Axegressor
Last (Listenable)
On a playlist with: Rytmihäiriö, Deathchain, Stone
Listen Last full stream (here)
I fucking hope this isn’t Axegressor’s “last” album, because just listen to all that Euro-thrash goodness! Last combines the rip-roaring ethos of ’80s and ’90s ‘Merican thrash with the grass-and-roots complexity and peculiarity of the Finns. This results in a really juicy, dynamic album whose nine tracks do not sound the same, *cough, uh, like some other thrash bands, cough*. Excuse me.

Godflesh
Decline And Fall EP (Avalanche)
On a playlist with: Jesu, Scorn, Final
Listen Decline And Fall EP full stream (here)
Two interesting things: First, this is the first new material from Godflesh since 2001. Second, it’s one of few post-industrial releases these days. But Decline And Fall sounds like a Pantera greatest hits album slowed down 35% with Fear Factory-style production. It’s an album you don’t immediately hate, but you question why exactly you’re not loathing every second of it. To each their own, but at least it’s interesting!

Slaves
Through Art We Are All Equals (Artery)
On a playlist with: Casey Sabol, Betraying The Martyrs
Listen Through Art We Are All Equals full stream (here)
I have nothing against damn good singers in metal. Ex-Dance Gavin Dance frontman Jonny Craig certainly makes use of Slaves to forefront his vocals, but the expense is charged to the rest of the music. So Through Art We Are All Equals is about as flat and uninspired as metal comes — the drums sound programmed and the guitars are all filler. And while Craig has a decent set of pipes, it’s nowhere near enough. And after all, an ace must be integrated into a talented band, whereas Craig more or less spreads margarine over shitty toast.

Inanimate Existence
A Never-Ending Cycle Of Atonement (Unique Leader)
On a playlist with: Archspire, Rivers Of Nihil, early Fleshgod Apocalypse
Listen “Staring Through Fire” (here) “Omen” (here)
Read Dave Mustein MetalSucks Review (here)
Let’s call 2014 the year of tech-death: Soreption’s Engineering The Void is a well-oiled machine gun, a wasteless mechanical masterpiece, with each part honed to excruciating precision. Archspire’s The Lucid Collective is the rapid-shot hellfire missile minigun, with a Norris-esque focus on all-out assault and campy insanity. Inanimate Existence’s A Never-Ending Cycle Of Atonement is one of those awful torture machines you read about online, one that slowly rips out your eyelashes and then drops lit matches onto your bare, red ass. Lol.

Allegaeon
Elements Of The Infinite (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: The Absence, Arsis, Fallujah
Listen “Threshold Of Perception” (here) “Our Comic Casket” (here) “1.618” (here)
Elements Of The Infinite is one of the best all-rounders you’ll hear this year, the band behind it has a goddamn sense of humor. And it’s about time. Metal people are inundated by genre-this and style-that that we might forget, you know, what the music is all about. It should be technical without being geeky, dorky without being snobby, and party-tastic without biting Andrew W.K. Check out the video for “1.618” and you’ll see. Allegaeon makes it rain!

Mastodon
Once More ‘Round The Sun (Reprise)
On a playlist with: Baroness, later The Ocean, Red Chord
Listen Once More ‘Round The Sun full stream (here)
Welcome, everyone, to Mastodon’s most rockable album to date. Compare Once More ‘Round The Sun to 2002’s Remission and you’d think they were written by an entirely different set of dudes. But pay attention to each album in between, i.e. each far-reaching but organic change, and then you’ll grasp the true genius of one of our greatest bands. OMRTS is psychedelic, moody, and blissfully messy. My favorite track is “The Motherload” cause the chorus gives me goosebumps every time. What’s yours?
