abre ojos gates

So now summer has skipped right over spring, we’re all sweltering in heat and soupy underpants, and what recourse do we have? The release of, like, forty new albums, that’s what! And thanks to stellar range in genres, STCOT this week is like a fucking street vendor for excellent new jams! You say what you want, we say what you need. We’ll even sell you. I say good riddance. Good day sir!

Structures Life Through A WindowStructures
Life Through A Window (Sumerian)
On a playlist with: Stray From The Path, Volumes, Elitist
Listen “The Worst Of Both Worlds (Ft. Drew York)” (here) “Extinction” (here) “Followers (Ft. Adrian Fitipaldes)” (here)

Hey guys, Structures ain’t half bad. I say this with 2011’s Divided By in mind. Structures has since retooled and reorganized to be extra crispy and fresh, and just a bit frantic. It’s a nice step beyond the dull, off-center post-djent they came from. What really tickles me, though, are the guest vocalists — more bands should utilize the talents of their brethren! It adds a nice varied dynamic to the whole package and gives us more to listen to. On the wholeLife Through A Window feels pretty good.

Lantlos Melting SunLantlos
Melting Sun (Prophecy)
On a playlist with: Alcest, Deafheaven, Have A Nice Life
Listen “Melting Sun I: Azure Chimes” (here) “Melting Sun II: Cherry Quartz” (here)

Think of Lantlos as the Ihsahn of shoegazing, all big and emotive and dramatic and distorted — all from one guy. He’s even got a decent voice — kind of the all-rounder one-man-band talent that makes for a singular message. Melting Sun doesn’t replace Deafheaven’s Sunbather at the pinnacle of what can be achieved in this vein, it comes pretty close.

Cursed Redeemer (Century Media)
On a playlist with: Grave, Goatwhore, The Crown
Listen Cursed Redeemer full stream (here)

Came for the old school DM, stayed for the thrash. Do me a favor and stream “Call Of The Revenant” (here) and tell me the little taco Slayer-thrash moment isn’t killer“Until The Last” (here) is more nuanced and stylish, but decisively old school. And while the death-growl vocals might not be your jam per se, they fit here perfectly to contrast the modernness of the riffage.

Graves At Sea SourveinGraves At Sea/Sourvein
split (Seventh Rule)
On a playlist with: Sleep, Om, Electric Wizard
Listen Graves At Sea/Sourvein split full stream (here)

I love splits — two bands can compliment/contrast each other so much better when they share a record. Graves At Sea is that kind of forward-pushing early Mastodon-esque post-grind shizzle you’d expect to see at your dingy local metal joint. Sourvein is a much softer, vocalized approach to doomy rock, mellowing you out after Graves chimes you in. They really do go together like ketchup and mustard.

Torch Runner Committed-to-the-GroundTorch Runner
Committed To The Ground reissue (Southern Lord)
On a playlist with: Young And In The Way, Dead In The Dirt, Homewrecker
Listen Committed To The Ground full stream (here)

Short-form grindcore at its finest. I suppose most of us would use the word “crusty” to describe Committed To The Ground; let’s also use the word “crotchety.” Something about Committed seems well-worn, like an old soul, but still immensely pissed off. It’s primitive but inherently timeless — so it’s best to imagine it like an old man, all fucking wise but still fist-shaking at those damn meddling kids in bands like Structures (no hate lol).

Killer Be Killed - Killer Be KilledKiller Be Killed
Killer Be Killed (Nuclear Blast)
On a playlist with: DEP, Mastodon, Soulfly
Listen Killer Be Killed full stream (here)
Read Alkahest MetalSucks review (here)

Killer Be Killed is Max Cavalera (Soulfly) + Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan) + Troy Sanders (Mastodon) + Dave Elitch (ex-The Mars Volta). If I were to come up to you randomly and say “omg these dudes are forming a supergroup,” you’d probably shit a brick right in front of me. But me, meh. I think the talents here — as exceptional as they are — do not result in anything cohesive. Instead, this feels disjointed and wanton, and too short of memorable moments. Maybe the trick is to try and not listen for each individual’s particular influence?
