Listen to the First New Floor Song in Eleven Years!
To a certain subset of heavy music fans the Floor reunion that commenced in 2010 was the reunion of the year, nay, decade. At the Who? Carwhat? I’m not saying I fall into that subset, but if you grew up listening to Melvins and Black Flag instead of Ozzy and Metallica I’m guessing that you do.
And with good reason: Floor have ended up being one of those bands that proved incredibly influential way after the fact, and of course they don’t get the widespread credit they deserve. If not for Floor there’s a good chance we don’t have Baroness, Kylesa, Boris, etc, or at least not in the forms we know them today. And we most certainly wouldn’t have Torche, formed by Floor founding member Steve Brooks after Floor’s [initial] demise.
And so: Floor are back, and they’ve just released a song called “War Party” from their upcoming album Oblation, out April 25 via Season of Mist (order here). Floor 2k14 sound very much like Torche; “War Party” is just as catchy as anything Torche have put out of late but, somehow, ballsier. Stereogum has the exclusive premiere; go on and listen!
When I saw Floor play at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn a couple of weeks ago… holy cow, they CRUSHED it, a massive wall of sound not only powerful but strikingly clear. Floor zoned in a sound and ran with it, and watching the reunited version feels just as revelatory as it must’ve in the mid ’90s.
