Maybe Slayer Can Sign to Kylesa’s New Label
Although some might question the sanity of starting a record label in 2014, Kylesa are a fearless bunch. And so band members Phillip Cope (guitars/vocals), Laura Pleasants (guitars/vocals), and Carl McGinley II (drums) will launch Retro Futurist Records next year. Their first release will Pslip by a Canadian prog band called Sierra.
Okey dokey. Honestly, this is the part of the press release that jumped out at me:
“Retro Futurist is offering music lovers a six-month vinyl subscription series, which includes Sierra’s aforementioned release as well as original albums from Jagged Vision, Darkentries, Wet Socks as well as subscriber only collectibles including a Kylesa 7” (hand-printed and numbered), a Retro Futurist t-shirt by Santos as well as a mystery 7”. More information is available here.”
A subscription-based physical media program is by no means unheard of, but I feel like a surprisingly small portion of the metal world has tried it… I certainly can’t remember any of the larger labels doing such a thing in recent memory. It seems like a smart idea, though, because not only does it sell product, but it ensures that listens feel some loyalty to the label’s brand.
But will people actually pay for such a service? I honestly have no idea! I’m curious to see how this works out.
No word yet on whether or not Retro Futurist has made a play for Slayer… hey, maybe that mystery 7″ is a new Slayer recording!!! Yeah! Definitely get your hopes up.
Below is Retro Futurist’s current release slate and an announcement video for the label… I don’t know who Wet Socks are, but I vow to find out. All these bands are trying to come up with super-br00tal names like Prostitute Disfigurement and Ebola Eye Socket Fuck, but, really, there are few thoughts more terrifying than enduring the squishy discomfort of wet socks. Genius.
