Czar
No One Is Alone If No One Is Alive (Cracknation)

In late 2010, Czar’s Vertical Mass Grave sat like a vertical mass mass inside my stomach. It was pure: Hard, sweaty, heavy rock with huge choruses and bulky vocals. Two years later, No One Is Alone If No One Is Alive is so much more, uh, metal — metallic hardcore, that is — but with a gentle, rocky side for your lighters in the air and the beer pouring down your gullet. You’ll notice that No One is much leaner than Vertical, but none of that simple swing-‘n’-bling is gone. It’s a great progression from one sub-genre to the next, bridging the two without disregarding the first.

Impending Doom
Death Will Reign (eOne)

Religious lyrics, generic riffs, and more slam than your body has room for! But okay, the genre has to have some high points, amirite? Impending Doom is one of them. They stand above the rest of the genericore bands in the sense that they hit hard (dat snare), fast, and without getting lame in the choruses. I mean, so much so that the vocals remind me of Chimaria and the riffage/melody of The Acacia Strain, albeit loosely. With Death Will Reign you get exactly what you expect, nothing more or less. So if you’re dissatisfied (or bored) then I’m wondering what you expected in the first place!

I can’t sit here and say that I’ve been on planet Earth for a super-long time. Not fooling anyone! I’m a young gun and I roll with it, always learning from my elders and soaking up the past (“before-me” time) with a borrowed sense of nostalgia. I feel like this is how all appreciators of music should catch up with the lineage of their favored genre. This said, I can’t say I’ve ever heard anything like Abisso; this picture sums up exactly how I feel about it.

Let me point you to a few key moments in Abominor: the intros to “Leech” and “Broken Asunder” and, uh, all of “Gaunt.” There’s nothing like the collision of from-the-sewer vocals, a bar-rock mentality, and 1,000% progressive tunes. You know when you step across bands that make you say, “wtf, why aren’t these guys fucking huge?” Yeah, Rising is one of those. But at the same time, you think, “what does being huge bring?” And to that I say: Who gives a shit. Big or not, Abominor rocks real and hard and if you’ve any goddamn sense in ya, you’ll love it.

Apex Terror (Listenable)

Blackening thrash is like the art of garnishing: Add too much doom-‘n’-gloom and the pace is ruined and the mood spoilt. Over-spicing is the fucking worst! That’s why an album like Apex Terror really tickles my fancy. It’s a great mixture of powerful/onslaught drum-centric riffage and almost-core thrash triplets. But how it makes you feel is the best part. It’s evil, but not overly concerned with just being evil. I can imagine Apex Terror playing at the gates of a hell where Satan really is actually a pretty cool dude and just listens to Slayer all day and wants to rock out and drink beer. My kinda guy.

Pimeän Tuoja (Inverse)

Progressive Finnish folk metal. Those four words alone should inspire anyone to click and listen. Do you like vocals you can’t understand (unless you know Finnish, in which case, fuck yeah!), drum fills, and chugga-chug riffs? Pimeän Tuoja isn’t just right up your alley — it is the alley. There’s something dirty and woodsy about Lovijatar: Imagine standing shirtless in the forest hacking apart trees for your raging campfire. Also, you’re carrying a hatchet and you’d want nothing more than a hot cup of cider and a vodka or ten.
