THE ALBUM OF THE DAY… INSOMNIUM, ABOVE THE WEEPING WORLD
Insomnium are a melodic death metal band from Finland whose unique stamp forgoes the thrash influence of Swedish bands like In Flames and Soilwork and replaces it with a more atmospheric quality reminiscent of fellow-countrymen Amorphis and H.I.M. Nevertheless they fit quite well into the melodic death subgenre which they execute to perfection.
Insomnium have a knack for doing exactly what you want them to do exactly when you want it — every single time. When a song calls for a slow down, they do it. When some double-bass blasts would tickle your fancy, there they are. When some glorious twin-guitar leads are just what the doctor ordered, wouldn’t you know it, Insomnium deliver. Every song is constructed with perfect attention to detail and perfect craftsmanship; Insomnium tell a story with their instruments.
That Insomnium so perfectly execute their chosen genre is wonderful for fans of melodic death like me, though the predictability might get to some who aren’t as drawn to this sound. Nevertheless I can’t really understand why anyone wouldn’t like this band. Be sure to catch them on tour in the US with Katatonia and Scar Symmetry this coming fall.
