Lars Ulrich: “There’s Another Frontier Heading in Metallica’s Direction in December”
The below is a quote from a recent interview that San Francisco radio station 107.7 The Bone conducted with Metallica’s Lars Ulrich:
“There’s a very interesting thing coming our way in December… There’s another frontier heading in Metallica’s direction in December. Which, if anybody [at the band’s management] even knew that I just said what I just said, they would hunt me down and silence me. But there is another frontier coming in December, which we’re very excited about.”
Which should make you extremely nervous. After all, the last time Metallica hinted at some big mystery project, it turned out to be Lulu.
But at least Ulrich has some self-awareness about the fact that his little hint might make ‘Tallica fans feel as much dread as they do anticipation: when The Quietus later asked the diminutive drummer to elaborate on the mystery, he told them:
“Lulu Part 2 – just to piss everybody off! [laughs] I believe that there’s an announcement on October 8. But don’t hold me to that, I’ve been a little caught up in [the film]. It’s not anything of that magnitude… There may be a few of you that would be disappointed, it’s not anything quite at that level. I found myself telling one of your colleagues earlier, there’s an Iron Maiden album called The Final Frontier. So I’ll borrow that from my interview an hour ago, and say, ‘My clue will be the Iron Maiden album, The Final Frontier.’ There you go.”
Ulrich then when on to reveal that it’s not a Christmas album, so, uh, okay, I guess that crosses one possibility off the list.
So what can we extrapolate from Ulrich’s Final Frontier reference? If we assume that “frontier” in this instance is synonymous with “something Metallica hasn’t done before,” well… they’ve made albums, movies, books, clothes, apps, and a festival, soooo… what does that leave? A comic book? A branded beer? A sex tape?
