The French have been nailing postmetal to the fuckin’ cross for the past few years. Bands like As We Draw and Plebeian Grandstand on Throatruiner are some of my all-time faves. There’s something smoother and more delicate about the Euro stuff, though. Whispers is no exception: It’s slow, revolting, and unabashedly French. It’s the musical form of stinky cheese and bread crust that cuts up the inside of your mouth? I think so. If these things are good things to you, then you’ll dig Whispers.

What a roster for “Knockdown Dragout” (listen above): Sammy Hagar, Kid Rock, and Joe Satriani. Like, you could put all the names in music into a big, spinny bin and never draw that combo! Anyway, “Knockdown Dragout” is titled like it a kickass track, but it isn’t. Sure, it’s swingy and groovy, but it’s too much rock for my taste. “Bad On Fords And Chevrolets” is even further down that path. Just 100% radio. I’m afraid the rest of Sammy Hagar & Friends is as well. Makes sense.

Sometimes I don’t mind a little milk and sugar in my coffee: Tales is heavy like you’d expect from a semi-djent genericore band. And what Tales lacks in originality it makes up for in melody, notably the female vocals in the chorus of “Sacred Lies” and the kinda-dub segment in “Walk On The Edge” (at 2:20) It’s a sweetened version of something that’d otherwise be much more astringent and bitter. Sometimes that’s a-okay!

I’ve never, ever liked Dream Theater. I’ve given them a million chances. I know they’re great, I know they’re highly respected. But they’re super mega lame. Like so lame. Maybe I’m spoiled by drop-Z Acacia breakdowns and impossibruuuu-fast Rings Of Saturn riffs, because Dream Theater and Dream Theater do nothing for me.

Super-flaccid melodeath rockers Dark Age have coiled up A Matter Of Trust for metal fans who want a little, uh, floppiness. The first thing you’ll notice about A Matter Of Trust is that it is not as good as an album by The Haunted. Or Soilwork. Or any melodeath band. Sure, there’s this weird, smooth electronic undertone. And the frontman gets some credit for his clean vocals. The riffs are all solid, the production is spot-on, and there’s nothing really to hate about it at all. Or get excited about.

“Six, six, fucking six!” Ah, it’s so fucking cheesy, but so fucking good at the same time. I mean, we live in the age of tongue-in-cheek. Well my tongue is in my throat, cause I balls-out love albums like VI. For the sake of argument, compare this to Dark Age (above). This is how mofucking melodeath should sound. Tune to the post-solo bit in “Chaos Is King” (at 2:25) and please tell me it’s not perfect. In fact, “Chaos” is the best song I’ve heard all week, and VI is one of the best albums of the month.
