Heavy Metal Trading Cards are Back
Does anyone else remember Impel’s line of Mega Metal trading cards from the early 90s? In case there’s any doubt that those were the days when everything with loud guitars was just lumped together, the cards covered a wide range artists, including Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, King Diamond, Dio, M.O.D., Skid Row, Bon Jovi, L.A. Guns, Slaughter, Vixen, and… Robert Plant. Man, I don’t even think Headbanger’s Ball ever played any Robert Plant.
Mega Metal’s current value on the trading card collector’s market is nothing, which means that my father was right when he said “Those cards are worthless.”
I pretty much assumed that after the demise of the Mega Metal series, the world was done with heavy metal trading cards. But I guess I was wrong! ‘Cause Topps has just announced a “Heavy Metal Autographs” set… that will be included in packs of their 2013 baseball cards. Why is Topps including these with baseball cards instead of making a whole new line? Probably because oh yeah Mega Metal cards ain’t worth the paper they’re printed on. But whatever. If these cards turn even one young sports fan into a metal fan, I’m all for it.

So, this line-up doesn’t make much more sense than the Mega Metal one did, but like I said, maybe it’ll attract some new fans to metal.

On a semi-related note: while doing a Google image search for the Mega Metal cards, it came to my attention that Revolver actually made some Big Four cards (below) for the quartet’s series of shows a few years ago. So I guess the spirit of Mega Metal has been alive and well all this time after all.
