They Shoot Ozzys, Don’t They?

It’s the extent to which Ozzy Osbourne is either no longer, or just incapable of, trying now that really bugs me. Take, for example, “Loner,” the latest new Black Sabbath song to be debuted live: the opening lyrics are “He’s just a loner/ He does things alone.”

Was it really necessary to define the word “loner” for the listener? It’s not exactly a SAT word now, is it? If the song was called “Obstreperous,” okay, I’d get it, your average Bud Lite-swilling Sabbath fan probably does not know what that word means (even though it may describe them quite well). But even your run-of-the-mill Dope fan should know what the word “Loner” means. And Rick Rubin, Sharon Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and who knows who else all heard this, and no one thought to give poor Ozzy some constructive criticism. And as a result, they all come off looking stupid.

Also JESUS CHRIST OZZY’S VOCALS. Even his “Sweat Leaf”-esque alright now sounds deceased.

This is now the fourth new song from Sabbath’s upcoming 13 that we’ve heard, after “God is Dead?”, “End of the Beginning,” and “Methademic.” None of these tunes are so much as a fly on the ass of the Heaven & Hell material. It is as though these clowns were going out of their way to prove their own irrelevancy.
