Listen to the First Samples of Tool’s Danny Carey and Jason Bonham on the Man of Steel Score
Although we probably are not going to get a new Tool album in 2013, we will be getting some new music from drummer Danny Carey, sort of: in February, he revealed that he, Jason Bonham, and “twelve really great drummers” participated in recording sessions for Hans Zimmer’s score to Man of Steel, the upcoming Superman reboot. Zimmer recently elaborated during an interview with CNN:
Sonically, this treatment of America comes across via a grouping of pedal steel guitars (instead of the usual string section), banging titanium and steel sculptures, and organizing “a who’s who of drummers” in a 12-member drum circle, including Jason Bonham, Sheila E. and Pharrell Williams. “The great thing about Superman is that everybody loves Superman,” Zimmer said with a laugh. “It’s very easy making the call and saying, ‘Hey, can you come?’ I remember phoning Pharrell and him saying, ‘I’m right in the middle of producing the Beyonce album in Miami.’ ‘Jason Bonham’s in Miami, and he’s getting on a plane!’ Next morning, there’s Pharrell, looking a little bleary-eyed.”
A third (and presumably final) trailer for the film has been released now, and it features some of that all-star drum circle. The resulting music sounds pretty goddamn awesome… although I’m not really sure you needed drummers of Carey’s caliber for this. But I guess if you’re in a position to get ’em, why wouldn’t you, y’know?
And here’s the audio with the dialogue turned way down in the mix:
