Feel the Wind in Your Hair and the Sun (Woman) on Your Face
My initial interest in Sun Woman was that Sam Brodsky, bassist for perennial MetalSucks faves Meek is Murder, is one of their guitar players (and he made their album art, too!). Having now heard the band’s self-titled debut, I can tell you that they sound nothing like Meek is Murder, and that’s not a bad thing ’cause they rule anyway.
Where Meek is Murder come from the heavily chaotic Botch-esque school of grind and hardcore, Sun Woman’s aggressive, raw, proggy sound is far more reminiscent of their Brooklyn peers in East of the Wall. Like that band, Sun Woman sound somehow incredibly controlled and totally schizophrenic; if Meek is Murder is a zoo monkey throwing feces at passersby, than Sun Woman is the mad scientist from The Human Centipede who’s so horrifying because he knows exactly what he’s doing, and what he’s doing is totally fucking insane.
“Chorus,” one track from Sun Woman’s debut, is now streaming over at Metal Injection. You should check it out, unless you’re the kind of person who actually liked the new Device album, in which case please never procreate. For everyone else: Sun Woman’s Sun Woman comes out this Friday via their Bandcamp page! NYC residents: the band will play a record release show that same night at St. Vitus Bar!!! It’s a terrific opportunity to become a Sun Woman groupie before it becomes too trendy.
