Anciients - Heart of Oak SmallAnciients
Heart of Oak (Season of Mist)
On a playlist with: Mastodon, Intronaut, Ghost B.C.
Listen Heart of Oak full stream (here)

The great Vince Neilstein raved about this genre-bridging/-connecting/-fusing/-deconstructing album last week, and it’s really damn good so let’s plug it a second time. You goddamn seriously need to check out Heart of Oak — it burns like snake poison and then soothes like the antidote, it rocks and then lullabies; fuck, it’s two steps away from making you breakfast in bed and touching your naughty bits. Okay so I’m blowing a bit of smoke, but I’ll be damned if this isn’t one of the most dynamic, fluid, and well-raised albums of 2013. What an indulgence. Oh, and dose vocals, dose vocals. Shivers.

Todtgelichter ApnoeTodtgelichter
Apnoe (Code666)
On a playlist with: The End, Junius, Ihsahn
Listen Apnoe full stream (here)

I’ve always got my eye out on new shit from new dogs (as well as old and new shit from old dogs) from Germany, and here’s a little sumthin’ sumthin’. Okay, it’s not a fantastic display of instrumentality or a showcase for any amazing vocals —  there are points where Todtgelichter’s singer more or less drops trou and shits on everything. Buuuuuut, Apnoe‘s mood and tone are highly palatable, visceral, and all working together in this strange, weird emotive soup-like homeostasis; it has the ups and downs of my most favorited and obtuse experimental releases. Zoom up to the 21:25 mark to get a small tasty flava of what I’m on about.

MemoryGarden-DoomainMemory Garden
Doomain (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: Nevermore, Amorphis (later), Communic
Listen “Daughters of the Sea” (here) “The Evangelist” (here) “Doomain” (here)

These Swedish doomy-doomers are all up in here belting out Nevermore-style operatic vocals on top of pounding, basic guitar riffs and synths, and hey, I guess it’s not that hateful. Not the shit you’d find in my back alley, but then again I’ve always had a harder time with this genre. Never-da-less, “Daughters of the Sea” is by far best of the above three  — the simplicity of the opening riff behind the male/female vocal duo + the synth = riding in a chariot made of Twizzlers on its way to Jupiter. Well, that’s how I felt! Do you also have a feel?

Eyeconoclast Drones Of The AwakeningEyeconoclast
Drones Of The Awakening (Prosthetic)
On a playlist with: Fleshgod Apocalypse, The Modern Age Slavery, Beneath The Massacre
Listen “Rise of the Orgamechanism” (here)

Hot diggity doggone damn does Italy ever have quite the scene in ultra-tech death metal these days! Razor-cut riffs and violently lucid drumming round out Drones — just like their playlist mates (above) . Also, if I had a quarter for every snare hit, I’d have an asteroid crater full of quarters to buy copies of this album to hand out to all this world’s good boys and girls! I’d be like Santa Claus, only decidedly more evil and badass. BTW, Santa Claus in Italian is Babbo Natale. Which is not badass. But I fuckin’ digress. This album shall be badass, “Rise of the Orgamechanism” is badass, and if it doesn’t make you tingle just a bit, then check yer pulse, yo.

Pyrithion The Burden of SorrowPyrithion
The Burden of Sorrow (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: As I Lay Dying, The Famine, Unearth
Listen “The Invention of Hatred” (here)

Metalcore times 400,000 with 400-string guitars, Pyrithion’s The Burden Of Sorrow blasts outward at 400,000 mph will all the energy and go-get-’em attitude you’d expect from Tim Lambesis (As I Lay Dying), Ryan Gilsan (Allegaeon), and Andy Godwin (The Famine). But Burden is rather formulaic — nothing to jump out from around the corner or behind the window to bite your head off then tickle your exposed, juice-spurting spinal cord. But the riffs are tight, the drumming nuts, and the vocals standard but still fitting. You know, I guess I don’t really have much of an opinion concerning Burden, it kind of just is. Kind of like a bowl of Cheerios — it’s got everything you need but nothing you really want. Come on, sprinkle some sugar on that shit!

Cerekloth - In the Midst of Life We Are In DeathCerekloth
In the Midst of Life We Are in Death (Hells Headbangers)
On a playlist with: Asphyx, early The Red Chord, Evoken
Listen “Born of the Void” and “Nest of Disease” (here)

Imagine an ocean liner slowly crashing into a waterfall of skulls: That’s Cerekloth’s ungainly gigantism. Depending on your take on doom-and-gloom metal, this could be a fantastic thing. Don’t expect any blistering noodles of wankery or even anything decisively complex to feed off of, but just relish the momentous force that oozes out onto the plate and giggles just a little bit, kind of like Jell-O from hell. There is a definite swing and a catch to keep you hooked, so let us all know how many times you run through the tracks before agreeing with me!
