MOTLEY CRUE’S DR. FEELGOOD IS THE BEST GUITAR TONE EVER PUT TO RECORD

This is not an opinion, it’s a fact. Mick Mars’ (via producer Bob Rock) guitar tone on the entire Dr. Feelgood record is as sweet as butter, smooth as caramel, delicious through and through. I’m not even talking about Mars’ leads, I’m talking purely rhythm tracks here. The guitar has enough bass frequency to make you feel it inside and enough high end to shape it, but the main course is the warm, tender, sweet, salty, delectable mid-range; it slaps you in the face with just the right amount of gusto making you feel all warm and awesome inside. The mid-range is where the tone is, and the tone here is utterly perfect! It’s got plenty of distortion, but not so much that it sounds like a buzzsaw. The attack of the pick hitting the strings is just so sharp and cuts right through to the bone — you can FEEL it! What’s remarkable about this album being released in 1989 is that the guitars aren’t soaked in bucketloads of reverb, yet still there’s just enough of it present to fatten up the product without washing away the precision of the sound. In short, it’s perfect in every way.
