Geoff Tate’s New Queensrÿche is Off to a Terrific Start

I thought it was pretty smart of Geoff Tate to make his new version of Queensrÿche a supergroup, because it means that even people who generally don’t care about Queensrÿche — like me! — will pay attention and at least take the band kinda-sorta seriously enough to give them a fair chance.

Less smart: doing whatever it is he did to alienate guitarist Glen Drover, who has announced that although he “was very excited about doing this gig initially,” he has “learned in the past week or so that it’s in my best interest not to do this right now.” He isn’t at all specific about the source of his re-education, and even though he syas that Tate “was very nice to me on my past trip to Seattle,” I think it’s safe to assume that Tate wasn’t very nice to him on his current trip to Seattle. I mean, there could of course be other reasons why Drover decided to bow out — maybe he wasn’t getting along with the other members of the band, or maybe he’s suddenly developed IBS or something — but given Tate’s penchant for being a ridiculous caricature of a human being, I don’t think I’m alone in guessing that that the vocalist had something to do with Drover’s departure.

And don’t forget that Drover played in Megadeth for more than three years. Which means that DAVE MUSTAINE IS EASIER TO PUT UP WITH THAN GEOFF TATE. Holy shit, that ain’t good.

So now we’ll wait to see who Tate gets to replace Drover, who was the fourth most famous member of his new band, after himself, bassist Rudy Sarzo, and drummer Bobby Blotzer. What is Keri Kelli up to these days? I think Queensrÿche is like one of three bands he’s never been in. Now is the time, you magnificent bi-color haired bastard!!!
