Sh*t That Comes Out Today: November 20, 2012

This week, let’s ponder what we’re thankful for! I for one must give thanks for all the eight-string guitars on Earth. Just wait till you see my Best Of 2012 list — it’ll be too low to read! For now, just continue building your Best Of lists via Shit That Comes Out Today, your heavy and hard new releases super-resource! You’re welcome!

Sh*t That Comes Out Today: November 20, 2012Eskimo Callboy
Bury Me In Vegas (Earache)
On a playlist with: The greatest music of all time
Listen “Muffin Purper-Gurk” (here)

Remember the first time you saw the video for “Surrounded by Silence“? or “Freaxxx“? Recall how you were left speechless by their awe-inspiring majesty? Then there’s little doubt that Eskimo Callboy will conjure similar feelings of wonder, astonishment, and loss of faith in humanity. It’s tough to be snarky about this band or Bury Me In Vegas; it’s clear that they don’t take themselves seriously, but even so they’re dreadful. Like, HORSE the Band and Iwrestledabearonce are good for shits and giggles, but either could make serious music if they put their minds to it. Eskimo Callboy could flip serious hamburgers if they had the motivation.

Sh*t That Comes Out Today: November 20, 2012Incite
All Out War (Minus Head)
On a playlist with: Lamb of God, A Life Once Lost, Devildriver
Listen “Die Alone” (here)

You may have heard of Incite via their connection to Max Cavalera: The Soulfly frontman’s stepson Richie fronts Incite, but the work of his dad and uncle Igor hardly figures. Instead, All Out War shares much more with the post-Pantera groove of Lamb of God and A Life Once Lost. More distance from the elder Cavaleras comes from Richie’s distinct, Keith Buckley-ish yelp. Solid, to-the-point metal.

Sh*t That Comes Out Today: November 20, 2012Blutmond
The Revolution Is Dead! (Code 666)
On a playlist with: Edge of Sanity, Unexpect, Ihsahn
Listen “Stop the Rain, Neuzeit Jesus” (here)

Blutmond’s The Revolution Is Dead! is one of the weirder extreme metal albums you’ll hear in 2012. (Its cover art hints at this fact — what is that thing?) It’s their sophomore album, and into its oddball Gothenburg stew they throw jazzy saxophone runs, dreamy female vocals, new age keyboard textures, and outsized black metal — not neatly segregated either. That sets up a theme of antimaterialism in Revolution‘s lyrics (“Attention Whore [Lost in Bliss]” “Breakdown 2012”). For free thinkers.

Sh*t That Comes Out Today: November 20, 2012Devolved
Reprisal (Unique Leader)
On a playlist with: Fear Factory, Strapping Young Lad, Before the Fall
Listen Reprisal full stream (here)

If you like very heavy, very fast, and very processed metal, then hey shake hands with Reprisal by Australian trio Devolved. This is the kind of music NRA hardliners dream of: Not even Divine Heresy and Fear Factory albums have this many machine gun riffs. Add sterile blast beats, mechanical leads, and inhuman gutturals, and The Fear Factory influence is clear. (Which makes sense in light of drummer John Sankey’s turns in both FF and Divine Heresy.) But Devolved wastes no time on catchy choruses or atmospheric interludes. There is no relief.

Sh*t That Comes Out Today: November 20, 2012Code Orange Kids
Love Is Love / Return To Dust (Deathwish Inc.)
On a playlist with: Converge, Gaza, The Chariot
Listen Love Is Love / Return To Dust full stream (here)

The latest noisy Kurt Ballou production is Code Orange Kids. And what a fitting band name it is. These guys and gal are around 18 years of age but play tight and noisy metallic hardcore that will sound right at home to anyone familar with their producer (and label): Frantic drumming, sludgy bass lines, and screechy feedback sections (also like The Chariot). A neat wrinkle in their sound is their dual vocalists, guitarist Reba Meyer and drummer Jami Morgan, whose shrill screams and clean wails are gripping and unpredictable throughout.

Sh*t That Comes Out Today: November 20, 2012The Algorithm
Polymorphic Code (Basick)
On a playlist with: Skrillex, Animals As Leaders, Cloudkicker
Listen Polymorphic Code full stream (here)

The Algorithm (aka Rémi Gallego) provided rare diversity on this year’s Euroblast fest and makes his full-impact debut with Polymorphic Code, an album tailored to young, ponytailed males who clutch both Skrillex and Bulb to their bosoms. In some ways, Gallego’s mashing of dubstep, electronica, djent, and tech metal is a clever way around the obnoxious “fakeness” of current drummer/axe-effects wielders. Realism certainly isn’t the goal, but that won’t convince a purist. That said, if you like all the above genres then Polymorphic Code is like a double-chocolate sundae, with hot fudge, chocolate chips, and a hershey bar on top.
