FEAR, EMPTINESS, DECIBEL: STREAM THE NEW DECEASED FLEXI DISC!
Before there were blogs there were these things called magazines, and the only metal magazine we still get excited about reading every month is Decibel. Here’s managing editor Andrew Bonazelli…
Not to discount our essential J. Bennett-helmed “Los Angeles bureau,” but Decibel more or less operates out of Philly and Virginia. The particular nexus has given us a comparably gnarly extreme metal juggernaut in Deceased, who were spawned in Arlington, VA and are now probably lurching around the parking lot behind our office waiting to feast on impressionable interns. (Why they haven’t slogged west to Pittsburgh by now is unclear.) Anyway, as the latest participant in our flexi series, the quartet fires a clean and true head shot through death metal’s past, present and future.
You may recall that their concept classic Fearless Undead Machines was Hall of Fame-certified in our Zombie Issue this April, but Deceased’s debut (one of Relapse Records’ first) was Luck of the Corpse in 1991. Now, 22 years after first contact, the title track that didn’t appear on that record has surfaced to not stagger, but sprint across the earth. We’re not talking about some decades-old B-side, but a riotous, crushing thrashterpiece recorded specifically for the series just last month. “The Luck of the Corpse” splatters your way via yellow-on-green plastic in the November Decibel. Like Dawn of the Dead party animal Roger says—and it’s a fucking crime that this isn’t on YouTube to insert right here and blow your mind—“Perfect, baby. Perfect.”
