GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS FOR METALLICA FANS

Metallica and director Nimrod Antal are filming the band’s shows in Vancouver tonight and tomorrow for their upcoming 3D concert film (that’s not the good news, just be patient for a second while I get some exposition out of the way), and apparently someone just realized that the movie will probably need, like, close-ups and stuff, so they’ve now added a third show — here comes the good news! — for which tickets will only be $5, with all proceeds donated to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Even I would pay $5 to see Metallica, and, certainly, it’s a mitzvah to give the extra earnings to a good cause.

Here’s the bad news: according to a statement by the band, the show will have “lots of breaks in it to allow for cameras and lights to be repositioned as the director sees fit,” which means you could end up hearing the same song, or even just the same section of the same song, over and over and over again, pretty much at the whim of the guy who made Predators. And worse still is that this means the Metallica concert film will not be a genuine document of a Metallica concert in 2012; it will be more like Metallica’s version of Kiss’ Alive albums, which, quite famously, are not really live at all despite what they claim.

Now, there are people who are going to argue that this is no big deal; music videos routinely pass off not-really-live concert footage as actual concert footage. But those aren’t sold as a legit live documentation. Maybe this won’t be, either; maybe the band is trying to make something more akin to a music video, which just happens to take place in a concert setting. But I’m guessing not. I’m guessing they’ll try to make the argument that since there was an audience there, even these close-ups are “real.” And they’re not. That’s like saying that the football game in The Dark Knight Rises was real because there were real spectators and athletes in the scene.

In any case, if you’re interested in attending, get the password for the sale here, then go here to buy tickets.
