AC/DC’s Original Singer Dave Evans Says We’re All Posers: “Metal Is A Pretend Attitude”
What’s this? Another old fart with a piss-poor take on the state of music today? Who would’ve thunk it?! Sure, we’ve had a flurry of other dusty old dudes bitching about metal and rock for a while now, but original AC/DC vocalist Dave Evans has joined the growing choir of generational discontent.
During an interview with Mexico’s Rock111 (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), Evans was asked about the current state of rock music and why it’s not the top selling genre out there today. And even though the question is kinda rote and overdone, Evans gave a relatively reasonable response.
“It’s about the people who buy the records. And they’re not playing it. The reason why it’s not big is ’cause they’re not playing it on the radio.
“The last rock band signed by a major label was about 20 years ago… I’m not talking metal; I’m talking about rock and roll, rock music. There hasn’t been a rock act signed for 25 years. So if people are not hearing it, how can they like it? You play it to them, they love it.”
That’s not a horrible take. Sure, musical tastes evolve and tend to be cyclical in nature, so right now we could be in a time period where rock takes a backseat to other genres, but that’s just the nature of the way things work. And that’s not to say anything about the rock bands that have been signed and done pretty well for themselves in recent decades.
But then he had to go and plant his foot in his mouth by dragging metal as a performative genre that has no substance or is just full of fake posturing from its musicians and fans. You know, like posers.
“Rock and roll is an attitude – a real attitude, not a pretend one. Metal is a pretend attitude – they get up there and go, ‘Rahrahrahrahrah’ – it’s bullshit. They get up there and paint their face and ‘Yeahyeah’ and they go home to their mamas: ‘Mama, what’s for dinner?.’ But rock and roll is real.”
Now, them’s fightin’ words, you shrimp on the barbie” sayin’, crocodile humpin’, wallaby huggin’, Aussie motherfucker. We could have all been cool about this shit, seeing as we all enjoy varying degrees of rock music, but you had to talk shit.
At least most of the modern metal bands out there today can stay in a band longer than you remained a member of AC/DC. I know 1974’s a long time ago, but you were only there for a couple singles before getting the boot and replaced by the legendary Bon Scott.
He goes on to say a bunch of stupid shit later in the interview, including how music doesn’t have to be insanely complex because “there’s no humanity in that what so ever,” which makes no fucking sense. You should catch the rest of the interview below.
