Epica

Aspiral (Nuclear Blast)

Fans of symphonic metal already know what to expect from Epica. It’s already in the name — this album has big, epic soundscapes that demonstrate what the listener pretty much already expects. Just… epic.

Magnolia Park

VAMP (Epitaph)

When people talk about the new age of nu metal, Magnolia Park is exactly the kind of sound I imagine. According to the band, VAMP is “a neo-gothic concept album that the band promises to be rich in world-building and compelling storytelling about a futuristic setting known as the Nocturne Nexus.” At times it’s got moody hooks, other times they tap into their more poppy side before devolving into the downtuned chug of their nu metal predecessors.

Mark Morton

Without The Pain (Snakefarm Music Group)

Though he’s primarily known for his guitar work for Lamb of God, Mark Morton’s got himself something of a solo career on the side. Released six years or so after his debut solo effort Anesthetic, this new batch of songs features some interesting featured vocal spots with artists like Clutch’s Neil Fallon or outlaw country singer/songwriter Cody Jinks. It may not be metal, but it’s always cool to see one of ours flex his musical versatility when they can.

The Mars Volta

Lucro sucio; Los ojos del vacio (Clouds Hill)

This new release from the vaunted prog rock outfit has a wild and at times unfortunate story behind it. Having been leaked months ahead of its official announcement, the band shut down the whole promotional effort behind it, instead opting to let fans hear the whole damn thing in a live setting. Now that the whole thing is up on popular digital streaming services, we can all enjoy the album as the band intended. Well, mostly how they intended.

Within Destruction

Animetal (Sumerian Records)

This is the sixth full-length studio effort by the nu-metal-ish/metalcore outfit from Slovakia and this time around they’re saying Animetal is “a culmination of all the stylistic experimentations that preceded it.” Featuring more of the band’s electronic and pop-ish sensibilities, you’ll either love this or absolutely bounce off it. Only one way to find out.
