Dark Angel’s “Extinction-Level Event” is Their First New Song in 34 Years

Earlier this morning, Dark Angel released a new single titled “Extinction-Level Event” that holds a special distinction for the band. It’s their first new track since the release of 1991’s Time Does Not Heal. Not only that, but it features music written by the guitarist Jim Durkin, who passed away at 58 years old back in 2023.

Speaking of the song’s connection to the band’s guitarist, drummer Gene Hoglan said it was more than just the fact that it was written by their fallen friend.

“Jim Durkin left us with this badass tune. It is so Dark Angel and I’m just so excited about it. We made it the lead-off song on the record, not as a tribute to Jim or because of sentimental reasons – like, here is the song that Jim left us – but because it’s just a totally killer song. He wrote it ten years ago, and by today’s standards it’s still ball-crushing.”

Now, with the band set to release a brand new album of the same name, “Extinction-Level Event” is being touted by the surviving members of the band as their first step into the modern era. Hoglan shared how excited everyone in the band is to get things rolling.

“Musically, lyrically, and vocally, I’m so stoked about this album. I’m really excited about Dark Angel right now, and everyone who’s heard the new album is losing their minds.”

The new Dark Angel album will be released sometime later this year, but you can purchase the title track as a single today.
