Tom Morello Says There Will Be Surprises from “Huge Superstars” at Black Sabbath’s Final Show

We’ve all seen how insanely good the Back to the Beginning lineup is, right? And we’ve all told ourselves we’re willing to sell our souls to make that show, right? Well, we have some pretty good news for you, because on top of its already incredibly goated lineup, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has confirmed that “there’s some huge superstars who are gonna be surprises on that day too.”

As the music director for Back to the Beginning (a mega festival extravaganza for Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath’s farewell show), Morello has shared some insights on the event in an interview with Austalian Musician. He tells the interviewer that on top of the already announced lineup, attendees can expect major guest appearances and that they want this show to be “the greatest day in the history of heavy metal.”

Commencing this July 5 at Villa Park, Birmingham, UK, so far, Back to the Beginning has announced performances from the biggest trailblazers in rock and metal, including none other than Metalica, Slayer, Alice in Chains and others.

Speaking about how it came together and the plan moving forward, Morello says:

“It came about [because] Ozzy and Sharon asked me to do. They surprised me one day and said, ‘There’s gonna be one more Black Sabbath show, all four original members, the last-ever Ozzy Osbourne show. We wanna have a big day of celebration and will you help curate it?’ And I was, like, Well, that’s crazy. But yes, of course. Heavy metal is the music that made me love music, and Black Sabbath invented heavy metal.”

He continues:

“Where it’s at now… First of all, when we first sat down, we have a very, very simple goal, and that’s to make this the greatest day in the history of heavy metal. And to that end, you’ve probably seen the listed setlist. And let me tell you, there’s some huge superstars who are gonna be surprises on that day too. So, the idea is to really acknowledge the importance of that band in a way that the whole world will forever know.”
