Fans Are Rightfully Putting Danzig on Blast for Selling Nazi-Coded Merch
Over the weekend, Glenn Danzig made a splash within the metal community. No, he didn’t get one-punch KO’d again. Nor did he actually release any listenable new music. No, rather than do something cool, the diminutive Misfits and Danzig frontman with fading relevancy did what most jackasses looking to cozy up with a certain group of people do — he began selling merch with a Nazi symbol on it.
If you Google Glenn Danzig right now, all of the top stories are about this merch kerfuffle, in which he was selling a t-shirt featuring a way too jacked cartoon version of himself standing menacingly in front of a “Black Sun” symbol. You may know it as a “sunwheel” or a “sonnenrad”, but the intent remains the same. It’s out there in the open, so naturally people with a functioning brain and conscience took to social media to blast the tiny motherfucker.
Tweets with an image of the shirt with a comment like “Can’t spell Danzig without nazi” began making the rounds. Reddit was ablaze with people fighting over whether the “Black Sun” is a Nazi symbol or not since it was used by civilizations way before the 1930s.
According to the Anti-Defamation League (which admittedly has had its faults recently), the “Black Sun” symbol was “one of a number of ancient European symbols appropriated by the Nazis.” In this case, it was an Old Norse and Celtic symbol. And in that instance, it makes it not unlike that other Nazi symbol we all know is immediately connected to Hitler and his hemorrhoids, the swastika.
And yes, the same symbol’s been used by pagan and Satanist as an “esoteric symbol”, but in an age where very real fears of fascism’s spread exist in the U.S. and around the world, maybe now’s not the time to break that bad boy out if you want to avoid being lumped together with the Nazis.
Without Danzig coming out and being like “oh jeez, I was just on a really big Celtic religion kick and totally wanted to show my support of the Old Norse gods at the same time while also proving I’m a super scary Satanist,” we’re only left with one conclusion — Danzig is either okay with cashing in on his Nazi loving fans or he himself sides with that ideology.
Because even outwardly anti-Semitic and “pro-White” (you know what that means) fucks are out here claiming Danzig as “one of our guys.” So either Danzig has to come out and deny his allegiance to fascist ideals or he can remain quiet and let the rest of the world know what we’ve now seen with our own eyes.
Either way, fuck him.
