There’s a Metalcore Version of Death Cab for Cutie’s ‘Transatlanticism’ to Celebrate Its 20th Anniversary
This might not be for everybody, but it should be. That one Washington state indie band Death Cab for Cutie had this one album right? It was called Transatlanticism and if you were an indie bitch in 2004-5 good grief was this part of your personality (I begrudgingly admit that I was this bitch). Something that I’ve always wanted, as someone who vasilated between indie queen and metal puta for a chunk of my life, was to get one of those other-genre versions of a specific album or genre. The Pop Goes Crunk (and the like) kids know what I’m talking about. I bring all of this up to say that there’s now a metalcore/screamo/post-hardcore version of the album called Farther Than Ever Before, and boy, does it make my heart swell.
The collective effort features covers by Drought, Dying Whale, The Holy Ghost Tabernacle Choir, Funeral Homes, and more. You probs don’t know who all of these acts are, and that’s okay. Just take this as a point of discovery. Farther Than Ever Before is part of a compilation series the Tabernacle Choir just launched called Sensitive Patterns, where each album will raise money for various causes. They released a statement on the whole to-do:
“As artists, music comes as a source of joy, an outlet for stress, and a platform to speak on what is important in the world. When we are able to make a difference, it is something that can elate us and remind us of our importance as people living around other people, and use our platforms to contribute to this world around us. And while we do what we can, it is often easy to feel lost and wonder what we can do to help more, especially in times like these.
“As situations in the world get consistently more dire for many different people, we are constantly looking for opportunities to help in whatever way we can. Sometimes, issues lie in various corners of the world (as we are currently seeing in Sudan, Palestine, Congo, Hawai’i, and many other places as they struggle against the heavy hand of imperialism). Other times, they live in our own backyard (the persecution of trans people, police violence against people of color, rampant homelessness, lack of addiction education and resources, and many more). We have personally been asking ourselves questions about if there is a way to make more of a tangible difference doing what we love to do.”
Proceeds for this release will go to both the Global Action for Trans Equality and the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. Any physical media purchased is said to be shipped out around the time of the compilation’s March release. Embed codes are not on my side right now, so click here to stream the album on Bandcamp.
