Spiritbox’s Courtney LaPlante Suggests Fans Are Sick of Metalcore’s “Perfect Crystal Production”

0

With a new album out today, Spiritbox are out here talking about the state of metalcore, as one does. And if you’re a fan, or even detractor, of metalcore, you probably have a lot to say about the subgenre. One area that people tend to have issues with it is the overproduction that happens on a lot of modern metalcore records. And if you’re in the camp that shit’s too clean these days, then you’re in the same camp as Spiritbox vocalist Courtney LaPlante.

That revelation was made during her recent interview with Rock Sound, in which she explained that the band’s new album Tsunami Sea is purposely not as polished as other records out there because it didn’t need to be.

“I think a lot of people are fed up with the perfect crystal production that is found in metalcore music right now. We love big pristine production but the physical human performance in there provided by us isn’t super edited or quantised this time around.”

Later on in the interview, guitarist Mike Stringer said the process that went into Tsunami Sea reflected the same one that took place during the band’s work on 2023’s The Fear of Fear EP.

“I think doing that EP was such a cathartic experience, sonically and lyrically, but also within its concept. It was great having someone else mix it [Zakk Cervini] which meant that me and Dan [Braunstein, Co-Producer] could sit there and be creative. We were able to put ourselves fully into it and then step away from it rather than making a six-song EP our whole lives.

“Moving into this record, we knew we wanted to do it the same way except really take our time with the process and the overall writing. That’s how we ended up with ten ass-beaters and then five proggy ones, and then five out-there weird shoegaze ones to choose from. It gave us such a variety.”

You can pick up Tsunami Sea wherever you get your music these days. Yet if you’d like to catch ’em live, they’ll be on tour across the U.S. and Canada with Loathe, Dying Wish, and Gel. You can find the full list of dates below.
