Exclusive: Pyramid Mass’ “Dissolution” is a Foreboding Aural Trip into the Apocalypse
In the classic Italian epic Dante’s Inferno, the descent into Hell is regularly described in great detail when the protagonist isn’t fainting from the sheer horror of it all. When I was approached to premiere “Dissolution”, the latest single off of their upcoming EP Gargling Rot, I didn’t know that I was going to hear a track that might be the perfect accompaniment to Dante Alighieri’s writings.
Like an avant-garde blender emulsifying the aspects of black metal, thrash metal, and hardcore that makes up their sound, Pyramid Mass manage to create an entire sonic narrative within the confines of the nearly four minutes that make up “Dissolution”.
That unholy concoction of fury and atmosphere is comprised of drummer Matt Wild, guitarist Nick Crider, and bassist/synth player Joey Anderson. All three contribute their vocals to the unsettling chorus that makes Pyramid Mass’ music and message as acerbic as it is.
Speaking of the band’s quest to make its mark over the years, Crider said Gargling Rot was the first time the proverbial planets aligned and things came together.
“Pyramid Mass has been working hard for many years to find our voice. Tons of work has always gone into crafting songs and ideas. It’s funny though, Gargling Rot was the first time that the process came easily. I think that because we have found our sounds and put so much work into the project that we can finally move without overthinking. I think we’ve found our confidence and in turn everything works and sounds better. Also just want to say if I had time I would make a grind band called ‘Gargling Rot.’ Just really want to make it known how much I love that name.”
