New System of a Down Album? Daron Malakian’s “Not Sure How Much I Want That Anymore”
The dudes in System of a Down may be “testing the waters” when it comes to the increased number of tour dates they’ve got on the docket this year, but for guitarist Daron Malakian, this may not mean a new album is on the horizon. In fact, he’s not sure if that’s even in the cards at all as far as he’s concerned.
In a recent appearance on Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin (as transcribed by ThePRP), Malakian and the legendary producer that helped put System of a Down on the map were discussing the 2005 releases of Mezmerize and Hypnotize and whether there was a possibility of a follow up all these years later. And while most of that conversation when his bandmates were concerned generally resulted in “maybe” and “it would be nice,” Malakian was more to the point.
“I’m proud of the records. I don’t live with any regret of anything like that. But it would have been nice to see where the band would have evolved if we kept putting music out. If we put out an album now, it’s just so far away from [Hypnotize/Mezmerize], it doesn’t continue the story to me.”
When pressed by Rubin about maybe “starting a new story” then, Malakian countered by saying he wasn’t entirely sure he wanted to explore that possibility.
“There was a time that that might have been something I wanted. I’m not sure how much I want that anymore — I’m sure people won’t be too happy to hear that from me. I’m not at the same place I was maybe 10 years ago.”
That being said, Malakian said a new Scars on Broadway record was been in the can for a few years now and that it should be coming out later this year. He also revealed that he’s been holding onto musical ideas that he wanted to use for System of a Down, but that he’s now planning to use for Scars on Broadway.
Despite all the confusion and will they/won’t they about a new record, the band still have plans to tour a whole lot this year. You can find the full list of dates below.
