Spiritbox’s Courtney LaPlante Was Mistaken for Poppy at the Grammys and She Just Rolls With It

I have really bad facial recognition and I’ll be the first to admit it. Put two people with vaguely similar hair color and skin tone next to each other, and I’m likely to assume that I’m seeing double. That first season of Mad Men confused the shit out of me because there were three vaguely chubby white guys with brown-ish hair so I didn’t understand what the fuck was going on. So I’m really glad that I’ve never been sent out to interview anyone on a red carpet because I’m likely to ask John Travolta about his performance in Longlegs or something stupid like that. Well, in an awkward moment at last night’s Grammy awards, someone with even worse facial recognition than me was sent out to do interviews and managed to interview Spiritbox’s Courtney LaPlante thinking she was Poppy.

Now, if someone just called her Poppy and she said “No, I’m Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox,” it wouldn’t have been that funny of a story. But the funniest part of the interview is that LaPlante completely rolled with it and pretended to be Poppy for the entire interview, saying:

“I am Poppy and I am really happy to be here nominated with Knocked Loose. I really hope we win.”

For the entire course of the three minute interview, LaPlante never lets on that the interviewer has the wrong person, even taking a fan question from LiveNation from someone who still didn’t get that they were talking to the wrong person. Thankfully, LaPlante seemed to know a fair bit about Poppy’s career and was able to talk about her previous nominations and the performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! But my favorite moment of the bizarre interview came when LaPlante was talking about how no woman has ever won this award before and said:

“It’s time for one of us to win and I hope it’s me or Spiritbox’s Courtney.”

I really hope that the interviewer didn’t get in too much trouble for her mistake, because it certainly made for one of the few good reasons to pay attention to this year’s Grammys.
