Last Night’s FireAid Benefit Featured a Surprise Reunion of Surviving Members of Nirvana
The FireAid benefit concert was held last night, being held at two venues in Inglewood California: The Intuit Dome and The Kia Forum. The benefit concert to raise money for Los Angeles wildfire relief featured a veritable who’s who of big names in the music industry, mostly modern pop artists like Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo, but also some legacy rock acts like Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. But the concert also served up a particularly big surprise in addition to the announced artists with a completely unannounced reunion of the surviving members of Nirvana: Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear.
As everyone is well aware of (and if you aren’t, where have you been the last three decades?), Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain died of an alleged suicide in 1994. Thus, there were some replacement vocalists filling in for the legendary frontman. Art-pop star St. Vincent performed “Breed,” legendary punk artist Joan Jett performed “Territorial Pissings,” iconic Sonic Youth vocalist Kim Gordon did the early Nirvana track “School,” and Dave Grohl’s 18-year-old daughter Violet Grohl performed “All Apologies.” Considering the turmoil in Dave Grohl’s life following his recent overreported personal scandal, I’m happy to see he and his daughter Violet are still on good terms.
You can check out the video of the historic reunion below. Meanwhile, while the concert may be over now, FireAid is still accepting donations on their website to help victims of the Los Angeles wildfires. Donations both go to short-term relief efforts as well as long-term prevention efforts to try and ensure that a disaster like this doesn’t happen again.
