It’s cold as fuck outside, but if you’re one of the lucky ones that gets to stay inside all day then count your blessings. For the rest of you folks that have to trudge out there into the frigid outdoors, know my thoughts are with you. Luckily, there’s plenty of new music to get the heart pumping.

Avatarium

Between You, God, The Devil And The Dead (AFM Records)

This melancholic doom metal outfit from Sweden originated as a little side project for Candlemass bassist Leif Edling back in 2013, but a lot’s changed since then. With this being their first new album in three years, Between You, God, The Devil And The Dead pushes their sound forward while still maintaining that fuzzy, groovy, and atmospheric edge.

Dax Riggs

7 Songs For Spiders (Bright Shadow LLC)

That name should sound familiar. Any fans of Acid Bath will instantly recognize Dax Riggs from a mile away. But rather than putting out a slate of death sludge metal as his solo project, Riggs returns for the first time in 15 years with seven new songs (hence the title). It’s emotional, it’s folky, it’s a little dirty sounding, but this is ultimately a dark and deep dive in sonic form.

Harakiri For The Sky

Scorched Earth (AOP Records)

Austrian post-black metal duo Harakiri for the Sky continue the trend of melancholic music this month with Scorched Earth. We actually have a review for this one up on the site that you can read right now. Needless to say, C.C. Delorean enjoyed it. “It’s dark, depressing, and deeply bitter, but it makes the most of what it has just the same, refusing to go gently into that good night and quietly hoping against hope that things will get better someday.”

Linkin Park

From Zero — A Capellas (Warner Music)

Were you a fan of Linkin Park’s From Zero but wished those pesky instruments didn’t have to get in the way of Mike Shinoda and Emily Armstrong’s vocals? That’s a bit of an odd stance to take, but the band released an a cappella version of their latest release to help fill that oddly specific niche. Have at it, I guess…

Wardruna

Birna (By Norse/Sony Music)

Four years after the release of their previous album Kvitravn back in 2021, Wardruna return with Birna. As a folk/ambient metal outfit, their songs traffic in Norse mythology, runes, and that sort of stuff. It’s evocative of that viking aesthetic, so if that’s your sort of thing, this will be right up your alley.
