Whitechapel Announce Hymns In Dissonance and Drop Its Crushing Title Track
Deathcore outfit Whitechapel just announced their ninth full-length studio album Hymns In Dissonance and all I can say is… is it March yet? Unveiled just moments ago alongside the album’s title track, we now know their upcoming release will drop on March 7 via Metal Blade Records, so at least the wait won’t be too long.
In conjunction with the album’s announcement, the band dropped the single and accompanying music video (which you can check out below) for its title track. And much like the first song we heard from this new release, “A Visceral Retch”, it’s fucking badass. And while fans have heard this song played live before, it’s particularly great to finally hear that ridiculously heavy breakdown near the end with the level of clarity that some shitty cellphone footage can’t provide.
Speaking of the track in particular, guitarist Alex Wade said this new album is their attempt to outdo themselves in the heaviness department.
“There is nothing nice about Hymns In Dissonance, from the riffs, to the lyrics, to the overall vibe of the album. We attempted to write our heaviest album to date. We wanted to put out something that was shockingly menacing and brutal.
“The album follows the story of a cultist who is gathering worthy people to join his cult, and there are moments in the storyline where the cult followers are singing an evil hymn to open a portal for the head cultist to enter.”
Further focusing on the album’s story and overarching theme, vocalist Phil Bozeman said the whole thing’s got a lot to do with those classic “seven deadly sins” and the concept of hymns.
“Hymns In Dissonance is a mockery of the true nature of what hymns are. Hymns are melodious and harmonious. Dissonance is the opposite of melody and harmony. Dissonance represents evil. The tracks on the record are the hymns, which represent the seven deadly sins, beginning from Track three to Track ten. Tracks one and two are the introduction.”
As for how the album fits into their catalog — especially after following 2021’s Kin — Wade said this one’s got a completely different vibe.
“I don’t think HID follows Kin musically at all. If anything, it’s the polar opposite. For this album it was fun to be able to just let loose and write ignorantly heavy music again. This album stands on its own. Phil was able to create a fresh story to write about, which, in turn, helped us write music with a fresher sound.”
Hymns In Dissonance will be released on March 7 via Metal Blade Records, but you can preorder your copy today. If you’d like to catch Whitechapel live, they’ve also got a huge tour lined up in support of the new record with Brand Of Sacrifice, 200 Stab Wounds, and Alluvial starting in March.
