Mastodon’s Planning to Get Spooky with Their Next Album
Some new information about the forthcoming Mastodon record should get fans of their more experimental efforts excited, as it sounds like the Atlanta-based band will be taking some liberties with tier follow up to 2021’s Hushed And Grim.
While speaking with Metal Hammer, drummer and vocalist Brann Dallor revealed some details about the album the band’s been working on for a while now. While we’ve known for a while that the band’s been “fine-tuning” the new songs, Dallor revealed it will be a more eclectic mix of their styles.
“[The songs are] all over the place. I hear some punk rock in there, but then I hear some insane prog and I hear the heaviest version of ourselves poking its head out again.
“You can talk all day about what you want to do, but at the end of the day it governs itself — it pulls you where your heart is.”
In addition to the overall sound of the album, Dallor also revealed that the band will be returning to the concept album well. During the interview, he said he had a “story I’m working on” for the new release, only revealing that the overarching theme will be “supernatural horror.”
As a long-time fan of the band, that last bit excites the hell out of me. I mean, they’ve done some really cool and evocative albums in the past, so I have full confidence that they’ll nail the whole supernatural vibe. Just listen to Crack The Skye and tell me they don’t know how to write some ethereal and spooky jams.
When it comes to the album’s release, Dallor was also pretty straightforward about that as well, stating that the world should be able to get its hands on it sometime this year.
“I don’t see a world in which it does not come out in 2025.”
So there ya go. Add that one to the list of anticipated releases, because aside from everything else, 2025 will at least be a good year for metal.
