System of a Down Members Respond to Nikki Glaser’s Joke About Glenn Close at the Golden Globes
Did anybody catch the Golden Globes on Sunday night? Normally I skip the Globes and just wait for the Oscars, but with Nikki Glaser hosting, I had to check it out. She’s, by far, one of my favorite comedians in the game and she demonstrated that in full force on Sunday. And she even made a metal joke when she introduced iconic actress Glenn Close, saying:
“ … To present our next award please welcome, from Netflix’s Back in Action, three-time Golden Globe Award winner, Hollywood icon and former drummer for System of a Down — Glenn Close,”
The joke got a pretty good laugh and seemed to at least mildly amuse Close. But, in the age of the Internet, the joke naturally didn’t stop there, as members of System of a Down naturally felt the need to respond.
First came the response from lead guitarist Daron Malakian who posted a video of the joke on his Instagram with the caption:
“Bet you didn’t know!!!! Bet you didn’t know!!!!! Somewhere between our first drummer [Andy Khachaturian] and John, Glenn Close was tearing shit up on the drums for us!!!!!!”
As if that wasn’t funny enough, Khachaturian showed up in the comments section to say:
“Who’s this first drummer guy?”
But that wasn’t half as funny as the response from current System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan who went so far as to Photoshop Glenn Close in over his own image in an old photo of the band with the following caption on Instagram:
“I guess the cats out of the bag thanks to that a@#h*+£ @nikkiglaser . The fact is @glennclose wrote the drums for most of the second system album and had to come in to lock down decent takes of a few songs as I just couldn’t handle the difficulty and we were running out of time. Thanks to @daronmalakian @serjtankian @shavoodadjian and @teamcoco for keeping the secret for so long. (a little known fact is that Conan [O’Brien] co-produced all our albums) I feel better that the truth is out there.”
So it’s good to know that the members of System of a Down took the joke so well, and they’ve done a great job of improving on an already hilarious one-liner.
