Dani Filth Again Talks Up the Ed Sheeran Collab; Still Hasn’t Released the Damn Thing
Okay, okay, okay. We’ve heard it once, we’ve heard it a million times at this point from Cradle of Filth frontman Dani Filth: the collab track between his band and British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is going to blow your dangly bits clear off your body. It’s so different and so unexpected that there’s no way something he’s been hyping for the last couple years could possibly suck — right?
I mean, there’s probably been more talk about this one track than there’s been about an entirely new Cradle of Filth album. This time around, the collab was brought up during Filth’s latest appearnace on The Downbeat Podcast (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), which is hosted by Stray From The Path drummer Craig Reynolds. As is customary at this point, the Sheeran single got brought up and well, here’s what Filth had to say about that.
“ The Ed Sheeran [collaborative song] is done and dusted. We did it like two years ago. It was weird, because we were planning to do it for about a year and a half.”
Two years ago. At one point it was supposed to come out closer to the end of last year, but that never materialized, but hey — we got a new single at least.
Almost like clockwork, the follow up question about the collab was how it all came to be. According to Filth, the pairing of Cradle of Filth and Ed Sheeran happened suddenly, as if materialized from the aether. Or it was their managers getting together.
“I think our managers got in touch with each other somehow. His manager, Stuart [Camp], used to listen to Coal Chamber [the band featuring Cradle of Filth manager Dez Fafara] when he was growing up. Ed [played a vampire in the music video for his single ‘Bad Habits’], and I think one day he got asked questions somewhere where it was, like, ‘Are you into heavy metal?’ I don’t know why. And he said, ‘Yeah, I was really into Slipknot and Cradle of Filth.’ … So apparently [our managers] talked, and the chat came around, we should do a collab, it’d be hilarious. And he was right up for it.”
There’s a whole lot of detail in the interview about how the recording process went an all that — most of which we covered in the past. Still, Filth said the final product came out “great” and that it hasn’t been released because everyone’s been so busy.
“We didn’t wanna release it back then because we were busy with other things. Then he couldn’t release it because he was doing a bunch of stuff. So it’s just gonna come out when it does. We didn’t wanna put it on the album.”
At this point, I can see this thing becoming the single version of Chinese Democracy or that Wu-Tang album that Martin Shkreli bought. Who knows if we’ll ever hear it, but at least Filth gave us a verbal explanation of what it sounds like:
“It’s a brand new Cradle of Filth song featuring Ed Sheeran, and a lot of it sounds like Ed Sheeran. He’s playing acoustic guitar, he’s singing Ed Sheeran, but a lot of it sounds like us. There’s a blast beat, scream. Ed really pushes himself in it as well. He does rock vocals. It’s about affirmation. It’s a bit about self-affirmation. It’s a really good song. Only about a handful of people [have heard it]. My mum hasn’t even heard it.”
That makes two of us, Mama Filth. That makes two of us.
