Nevermore’s Jeff Loomis and Van Williams Tease Band’s Return
How many of y’all remember Nevermore? They’re that one prog metal band who hailed from the grunge capital of Seattle in the early ’90s? Well, it seems like they’re returning. Maybe. Probably. Possibly?
Van Williams and Jeff Loomis (who was also in Arch Enemy until last year) each shared a one-minute video on their socials on Friday, December 27, that seemed to tease whatever the hell it is those two are working on. The video had a bunch of Nevermore-related imagery, along with what seems to be the pair posing with some text that says “Resurrecting the Dream.” The video closes out with the band’s logo with more text that says “A New Chapter Rises 2025.”
Nevermore broke up in 2011 because Loomis and Williams decided to leave the band because of some fuckery with the singer Warrel Dane and the bassist Jim Sheppard. Dane said that Nevermore was “the greatest band that alcohol ever ruined.” Some years later in 2017, Dane passed away at the age of 56 due to having a heart attack while in Brazil working on his now posthumous album Shadow Work.
Loomis did an interview in 2019 Metal Master Kingdom, where he expressed how difficult it would be to keep the band going without Dane:
“It’s one of those things where I think Nevermore had such a special sound and it was simply because of all the musicians that were in that at the time. Van, me, Warrel, Jim. We had numerous different guitarists in the band throughout the years. We had Chris Broderick, we had Tim Calvert, who sadly passed away. A lot of good players. Steve Smyth, Curran Murphy. All these guys were a part of Nevermore in the past. Honestly, in my vision, it’s important that you move on in your life. I really would like to remember the spirit and the attitude that we had as a band with the music and just move on from there. Because without Warrel, it’s just not feasible, in my mind. [He is] sadly missed. He was one of my best friends. Things like that happen and it’s a very sad situation. It really was. But we have the music to remember it all by.”
It seems like Loomis has changed his mind on the matter, and that’s pretty cool. Guess we’ll see what happens?
