What is System of a Down Teasing on Social Media?
The recent announcement of three stadium shows with System of a Down, Korn, Deftones, and Avenged Sevenfold in 2025, and the subsequent addition of second dates added in each cities to bring them up to six shows in total, came as a bit of a surprise considering how little activity has been going on in the System of a Down camp lately. Six shows is twice the number of live shows that System of a Down put on in 2023 and 2024 combined. And, every time we report on an interview with a member of SOAD, it seems like they’re talking about how uninterested they are in putting out new music and how little interest Serj Tankian even has in being in the band anymore. So, while six shows is a surprise, the fact that they’re now teasing something else is absolutely astounding.
On social media yesterday, System of a Down posted a video of an eyeball opening with a clip from their famous track “Chop Suey!” from their 2001 album Toxicity with the text on the screen just reading “WAKE UP!” The caption on the Instagram post just gives the address for the band’s official website, and if you click on the same video on their website it just leads you to a link to sign up for their mailing list. So what the fuck could they possibly be hinting at?
As our friends at Metal Injection point out, all the possible options seem pretty unlikely. Toxicity turns 24 in 2025, which isn’t a significant year for an anniversary tour in a society with a base-10 number system. Maybe if humans were born with six fingers on each hand, 24 would be a more significant number but, as it stands, it’s not. And the possibility of any new music seems unlikely after everything the band has said on the subject recently. Besides, it hardly makes sense to stick a 24-year-old song in a teaser for new music. So the whole thing is likely to leave us scratching our heads until they make an official announcement.
