Now There’s an Official Music Video for Gojira’s “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)” from the Olympics
If we had to pick some of this year’s most impactful metal news, it goes without saying that Gojira‘s performance of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)” during the Summer Olympics’ opening ceremony would be high up on that list.
As the first metal band to ever perform at the Olympics, Gojira helped expose countless people around the world to the genre while showing it in a positive environment without compromising any of its integrity. I mean, the performance had decapitated French aristocrats singing along while Gojira played dangling off the side of a castle that was once converted into a prison for people waiting for the guillotine called La Conciergerie. Metal.
Well, with its recent nomination for a Grammy, it looks like now was the perfect time for Gojira to put out an official music video for that performance. Though it’s not much more than the original footage that was shot for the original broadcast, it’s much better quality and shows the grand scale of the performance. And while I think it would have maybe been cooler to see the song showcased with new footage or something new shot for the song’s Grammy nomination, this is still a cool reminder of just how epic that shit was.
And while it’s easy for us to only pay attention to Gojira’s part in this whole thing, let’s not forget the simply amazing vocal performance of mezzo-soprano opera singer Marina Viotti, whose part in the song only added to the grandiosity that landed on everyone’s screens.
Does the song have a chance to win a Grammy? It’s possible, though it’s up against Spiritbox, Metallica, Judas Priest, and Knocked Loose, so it’s got some stiff competition. Either way, we now have this video to keep their insanely epic performance out there for the world to watch whenever it wants.
