Former Primer 55 and Soulfly Member Bobby Burns Diagnosed with Alcoholic Liver Failure
Multi-instrumentalist Bobby Burns was one of the founding members of the nu-metal group Primer 55, playing guitar for them for most of the band’s career and taking over as vocalist for their last five years as a band before breaking up. He also spent seven years playing bass for Soulfly, and his most recent project is a band called Murder the Flesh. He’s had a pretty solid career in metal, even if he isn’t the biggest name that you can remember. Well, we’re very sorry to report that this nu-metal veteran announced on Friday that he has been diagnosed with alcoholic liver failure.
The announcement came from Burns himself on his Facebook account where he posted:
“So… as many of yall know by now I’ve been in and out of the hospitals for the past…. Over a year at this point. Early last year I hadn’t been feeling well and this and that having pains in weird places etc. So I ended up unwillingly going to the ER. Test after test, x ray after x ray a few drs come in my room and say down and told me that I had alcoholic liver failure, cirrhosis and acidosis. Shockin at first because I used to have this thought that I would never die and made of steel lol. I felt now the time was right at least to let everyone know what’s been goin on and supporting me with words of encouragement. I appreciate it no end. With all that bullshit being said. I don’t regret a single decision I’ve ever made on my life even if it was a big mistake and I’m not scared. I did all of this to myself by myself and enjoyed every moment! Not lookin for pity in anyway. I’ve lost a lot of brothers and sisters along the way from the same thing and trust me it’s far from glamorous. Welp. There ya have it folks! Yall can stop wondering now! FAMILY FOR LIFE. ALWAYS CARRY THE FLAG FOR THE FAMILY”
On Saturday, he posted a follow up with some pictures of himself in the hospital, saying:
“Well they finally cut me loose this afternoon but not without some parting gifts. Pneumonia and COPD. It’s not even xmas yet!”
While I do take issues with some aspects of the 12-step recovery method, I firmly accept their belief that alcoholism is a disease, and it’s not an easy one to recover from. So, while I’m sure there are plenty of people who will have nasty things to say about Burns while blaming him for his own disease, I won’t be amongst them. I’m always sorry to hear when someone struggles with addiction and suffers difficult repercussions from it, and I’m sure all of MetalSucks will join me in wishing Burns the best of luck as he moves forward with this difficult diagnosis.
