Good News: Megadeth Will Never Play Their Cover of “Anarchy in the U.K.” Again
Megadeth frontman and mastermind Dave Mustaine says he will never again perform the band’s cover of The Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy in the U.K.” from Megadeth’s 1988 album So Far, So Good…So What! And, well, that’s probably for the best, all things considered.
In a recent interview with Steve-O’s Wild Ride! Podcast (that was reported on by Loudwire), Mustaine was talking about songs he’s taken an extended break from because of his religious beliefs and Mustaine said that he never intends to play the band’s cover of “Anarchy in the UK” again:
“Because it says, ‘I’m an antichrist,’ and I’m not an antichrist.”
Okay, can we talk about “Anarchy in the U.K.” for a second? First of all, I would like to say that, as an absolute lover of the punk rock genre, the original Sex Pistols song is an absolute trash song to begin with. “Anarchist” doesn’t fucking rhyme with “antichrist.” Also, considering that John Lydon is now somehow a Trump supporter without even being an American, it’s the most clearly hypocritical punk song ever written other than that Anti-Flag song about how rape is bad.
So Megadeth, in 1988, tried to cover the song, changed the lyrics from “UK” to “USA,” and randomly filled in words that Mustaine didn’t fully understand from the original. Mustaine, by the way, also leans to the right politically, so it’s weird that all these very non-anarchists keep wanting to sing about being anarchists. Overall, it’s an awkward cover of an already awkward song. So if Mustaine doesn’t want to play it anymore, I think that the world is better off without more iterations of that dumbass song.
