Arachnophobes Beware: Dave and Paula Lombardo Dropped a New Single “Spiderweb”

Having signed to Ipecac Recordings last month, Venamoris are likely gearing up for the announcement and eventual release of their sophomore album sometime next year. And even though we don’t know what their relative release window will be or even what the album will be called, we now have its second single and accompanying music video for the hauntingly sexy track “Spiderweb.”

For clarification purpose, Venamoris is the passion project of Paula and Dave Lombardo. Yes, that Dave Lombardo. The duo’s official description goes as such:

“Canadian born singer/songwriter Paula Lombardo, who performs vocals and piano for this project, bursts with vulnerability and intimacy, addressing a broad scope of emotion: anger, healing, pain, hope. It’s evident that Venamoris was founded out of love, passion, communication, respect, and trust. One person thriving in music encouraged the other, who had abandoned music to find their way back. It is the result of many late nights with too much wine, and even more truth laid bare: an aural couple’s journaling generously shared with the world.”

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that I’d describe something Dave Lombardo — the man I grew up idolizing behind the kit with Slayer — as “sexy,” but here we are. Though I imagine that has a lot to do with the sultry vocal delivery that his wife Paula Lombardo delivers in the track.

According to Paula, the song is about “the cathartic fantasy of pulling a thread from the sticky, cruel web of a narcissist and using it to choke the sound of their lunacy.”

Released last February, the couple’s first album Drown In Emotion was equally as evocative, emotional, and at times smouldering. It really is completely different from nearly everything else Dave Lombardo’s been involved in, save for some of the more avant-garde projects.

Is this metal? Not really — the lyrics can be incredibly dark and heavy but musically it’s not. Still, it’s worth checking out if you’re a fan of Lombardo’s. It’s great to see and hear a different side to the power couple.
