Jonathan Davis and David Silveria Reflect on Korn’s 30th Anniversary
Over the weekend, iconic nu-metal band Korn celebrated their debut album’s 30th anniversary. Countless fans all over the world reflected on the 1994 release, which saw the little band from Bakersfield thrust themselves into the limelight and take their first steps to the powerhouse they are today. In a pair of separate social media posts, frontman Jonathan Davis and former drummer David Silveria reflected on that iconic release, taking a moment to consider the impact Korn had on the scene all those years ago.
As the founding vocalist and voice of the band, Davis looked back at the release of the band’s debut album. Now at 53 years old and 14 studio albums under his belt, he said he was thankful for the career that album helped kickstart, as well as the individuals that helped make that record happen in the first place.
“I can’t believe you’re 30 years old. I’m so proud of this record, it changed so many things in my life. I remember my 24 year old self so nervous that I had opened my heart for the world to feel the pain I was going through at that time. It’s so incredible it helped so many with their journey through the darkness we all know so well.
“@ross_robinson thank you for capturing every emotional breath I took, the sound of my teeth grinding from the tension in my body. My brothers @munky_korn, @brianheadwelch, @fieldykorn @silveriadavid you guys gave me the most incredible music to do what I do. You guys made me feel safe and I’m forever grateful. To everyone that listened to this record, thank you with all my being. It gave me strength and this amazing feeling I wasn’t all alone in al this. Here’s to many more years!!!! I love you all.”
Having been out of the band since he left in 2006, Silveria’s largely been out of the spotlight, aside from the occasional band here and there. Still, despite his departure, he said he looks back on his time with the band fondly. These days Ray Luzier holds things down behind the kit, but it’s hard not to recognize just how important Silveria’s unique drumming style helped propel the band.
“When I was 10yrs old I got my first drum set. That’s when I knew I wanted to play music for people everywhere. Then I met the guys and it all came true. But none of it would have happened without the fans all over the world. Thanks to you my childhood dream came true.
“The right five guys came together at the perfect time and made history. I have the sincerest gratitude towards the guys for their amazing creativity, their absolute dedication and hard work and their commitment to the band. I love you guys so much!”
Having grown up at the exact right time to grow with Korn’s self-titled and being a huge fan until Untouchables, it’s been great to revisit this album after so many years. Remember, that album has gone double platinum off the back of singles “Need To,” “Shoots and Ladders,” “Clown,” and of course — “Blind.”
